The Client
Phoenix Leather Goods launched in 1997 in Naperville, Illinois, as a
small family business. Using their retail buying savvy and knowledge
about the manufacture and sales of leather goods and accessories, the
company started selling their products in high volume flea markets in
the Midwest before moving onto the online auction site eBay.
The high volume of sales via eBay led to the launch of BeltOutlet.com in
1999 and the company's expansion into a multi-unit office and warehouse
facility. The company later acquired the rights to men's luxury
accessories brand CrookhornDavis in 2016 and acquired Trafalgar Leather
Goods in 2020.
Over the next two decades, the majority of Phoenix Leather Goods (PLG)
sales were conducted online via multiple third-party marketplaces,
including Amazon, eBay, and others.
The Challenge
Phoenix Leather Goods accumulated tens of thousands of glowing product
reviews during their twenty-plus years of online trading – nearly 80,000
to date. Of those reviews, more than 70% were 5-star ratings.
Unfortunately, all of these valuable reviews were stuck on eBay and
Amazon. They had no reviews on their own Shopify site, and unless they
could find a way to migrate them, they would have to start from scratch.
Luckily they found Opinew
Product reviews are critical to the general public to validate
products’ quality.
Brian Rusin
Head of eCommerce for Phoenix Leather Goods-
Product reviews remain the most effective way for companies to boost their
conversion, credibility, and eCommerce channels. According to recent
studies, 63% of customers are more likely to purchase from a site that
features user reviews, 88% of online shoppers include reviews in their
purchase decision, and 70% of customers consult reviews or ratings before
making a final purchase.
As Phoenix Leather Goods sought to move sales from third-party
marketplaces onto their in-house online store, they did not want to
lose their hard-earned reviews and positive ratings. Trust takes a
long time to build and even longer when it’s online.
The 50,000+ plus five-star reviews served as undeniable testimony of the
quality and excellent service of the PLG brand. To give Phoenix Leather
Goods the recognition it deserved on their site, their many positive
reviews would have to be displayed on Beltoutlet.com for new customers to
see.
The Solution
Rusin came across Opinew in the Shopify app store early in 2020 and
implemented it shortly after that on Beltoutlet.com and Trafalgar.
Opinew is a Shopify reviews app that allows companies to quickly
and easily import reviews from Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress.
Their
review management system also allows etailers to request reviews from
current and past orders. Rich, authentic, user-generated reviews,
including photo and video reviews, convert customers.
Widgets are
customized to match existing web themes and device-agnostic so that all
reviews seem native to the site and display beautifully regardless of
the device used.
Phoenix Leather Goods Results
Phoenix Leather Goods accumulated tens of thousands of glowing product

Unfortunately, all of these valuable reviews were stuck on eBay and

Rusin says that he would recommend Opinew to others as,
“Implementation was straightforward. It’s easy to use, has a lot of
additional features, and is not a significant detriment to site speed
as some other apps are.”
